Ties that Bind: Creating Family Traditions for the Holidays

Family values and cultural customs are passed down in the most enduring and sentimental ways through traditions like seasonal decorating, cooking time-honored recipes, or singing family favorites together. Share the customs you cherish with your children, but also take time to establish new ones for them to pass on.  First choose to do something meaningful; be sure that everyone’s intentions are incorporated. Second, be willing to retire certain traditions as your children move through various phases but resist to the urge to let the teenage years convince you to retire your traditions all together. Finally, keep things simple and emphasize strengthening family relationships. The kids will appreciate your efforts in the end.
