Use of CBT for Severe Mood Disorders in ‘Real World’ Settings

In a recent study, brief cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) was examined to see if it could help people with severe depression, as well as those with bipolar disorder with depressive episodes. Of the 951 people who participated, 30% showed recovery from depression, while others showed improvement in interpersonal relationships and well-being. They also had decreases in depression, self-harm, worry, substance abuse, and emotional liability. The findings of this research, compared to that of benchmarked studies, show that although the people in this study were being treated for severe depression and were only in treatment for about 10 days, the magnitude of improvement is similar to that of a controlled study.
