6,000 Steps to Good Health
A recent study from Brazil has concluded that women who walk approximately three miles a day (about 6,000 steps) can lower their risk for diabetes and metabolic syndrome. The study was published online in the journal Menopause. The biggest surprise of the study was that it did not seem to matter whether the exercise was part of a structured routine or just every day, ordinary tasks. Weight bearing exercise, such as walking, is known to help keep women’s bones and hearts strong, especially in midlife. It also helps reduce the risk of breast cancer. Additionally, regular exercise can reduce hot flashes, counter depression, sharpen cognitive skills, and help an individual sleep better.
