Beyond Adversity

While major disasters grab the headlines, the majority of life’s calamities are self-inflicted. We know that failures are inevitable; we can either fear them or learn from them. If we recognize as many as possible of the needless stresses in our lives, we can combat them and experience a rising tide of resilience. Albert Ellis, the founder of rational emotive behavioral therapy, believed that most people are their own worst “pains in the duff,” mostly due to the irrational expectations we have of ourselves and others. One of Ellis’ solutions is the unconditional acceptance of self, others, and life, accepting things as they are.
