Can Drugs Cause Alzheimer’s?
You may have heard a rumor that some drugs, even ones available over the counter, are linked to Alzheimer’s disease. There is indeed some credence to this rumor, as a large study was published in March 2015, that shows long-term use of certain drugs increases your risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. These are drugs that contain substances that inhibit the action of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is responsible for transmitting information through the nervous system. Drugs that act upon this are called anticholinergic drugs, some of which are very common, like Benadryl. Some sleep-aids, antidepressants, and overactive bladder control drugs are also anticholinergic.
