CBT Improves Memory Functioning in Patients with Bipolar I Disorder
A new study published in the Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry indicates that people who have difficulty with memory due to bipolar disorder are helped through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Researchers found that bipolar patients have difficulty memorizing lists of words and the majority of those words that they could recall had negative connotations. By using CBT along with prescribed medication, bipolar patients responded significantly better after a six-month treatment plan than patients who were given medication alone. The conclusion of the researchers was that CBT effectively helped not only general symptoms among bipolar patients but also improved memory and helped reduce the negative connotations of the words that the patients could remember.
