CBT Provides Stress Relief for Parents of Children with Disabilities
Parents of children who have a chronic illness or mental disorder are likely to experience chronic stress themselves. Many people have experienced success in reducing stress through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), yet until recently, no study of CBT has been conducted for this demographic. In 2014, two single-case studies were done on mothers who experienced extreme stress due to their respective son’s autism or Asperger syndrome. This was causing them anxiety, depression, and exhaustion. In both cases, CBT resulted in improving the mothers’ mental health. While these studies were small, they serve as good reminders that mental healthcare for parents will help them better care for themselves, and their children.
