Couples Therapy for One
Sometimes couples therapy is a solitary prospect. Taking a solo approach to couples counseling may help alleviate situations where couples can’t get past their complaints to get to deeper issues or relieve circular attack and defense interactions between spouses. According to a five-year University of Denver study of 300 committed relationships, couples therapy for one acts as relationship skills training for the willing client. Usually the female seeks help and is provided previously untapped hope and direction for the relationship. To be effective, the participant must realize that fixing the other person is not the goal, but instead addresses her own internal issues, needs, and perspectives, thereby alleviating relational pressure.
