Can you pass experiences down to your children or grandchildren through your genes? Will they love or assess meaning the way you do now, simply because it’s in their genetic makeup? Increasing interest among scientists in epigenetics says that the repetition of experiences affects “how genes are expressed and packaged without altering DNA,” says Professor Rudy Tanzi at Harvard. Still, while evidence of this phenomenon is clear in mice and fleas, it remains circumstantial in people. Tanzi teamed up with Deepak Chopra to explore how chemical responses in the human body and brain facilitate genetic changes in their book Super Brain, and suggests that dynamic changes in the brain are largely within our control.
