Often it’s difficult for a depressed mind to take the first step to break out of a cycle of hopelessness and helpless thinking. A guide – a caring friend or even a therapist – can be of great help. And after achieving that all-important first step, it’s time to engage the senses.

For example:

  • Engage the body – get moving: take a zumba class, ride a bike, or join a softball league
  • Taste new foods – find a new restaurant, buy something special at the grocery store, or fix your favorite dessert
  • Smell the roses – figuratively and literally: pick flowers, light a scented candle, or brew your favorite coffee
