For years, those suffering from depression had only one option left, if multiple courses of drugs failed to help them – Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), or also known as shock treatment. But now, an exciting new tool is available – Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), which is a painless, non-invasive treatment without the use of drugs or sedation. In a study done in the UK, the magnetic pulse device, applied to the head, was guided by an MRI that measured the changes in brain circuit activity. According to the study results, TMS appears to “reset” depressed brains by slowing the activity of the prefrontal cortex.
