How Scared are People in Their Neighborhoods?
Since the prevalence of fear can have negative side effects on health, well-being, and economic development, Gallup’s World Poll set out to find an accurate measurement of how scared people really are. Instead of looking at crime reports that can be misleading, Gallup scientists asked one crucial survey question that turned out to be the most revealing: “Do you feel safe walking alone at night in the city or area where you live?” The results of the inquiry revealed that in certain geographical locations, the presence of fear was so great that people wouldn’t even shop at local markets.
