Imago Relationship Therapy and Unconscious Material

One of the problems with conventional marriage therapy techniques such as behavior modification, contract negotiation, and active listening, is that they are limited to addressing conscious material.  While these methods can be helpful to an extent, they do not include accessing the unconscious material related to childhood wounds and deep conditioning.  Harville Hendrix’s model of Imago Relationship Therapy has a process called “re-imaging the partner,” which allows partners to actually see the wounded child in their significant other.   By fostering genuine empathy and validation between partners, this technique allows marriage communication to transcend the level of normal power struggles.
