Is Plastic Wrap Safe?
According to Dr. Andrew Weil, plastic wrap was once made from PVC containing phthalates. Phthalates can disrupt hormones and leach into food. Since 2006, plastic wrap made in the US is phthalate-free. However, most now contain chemicals that have been linked to breast cancer in women and low sperm count in men. It is possible for chemicals in plastic wrap to get into foods that are covered with these wraps when heated in a microwave. The FDA advises consumers to use only those wraps marked “microwave safe” for reheating food. Dr. Weil recommends that you avoid plastic wrap altogether and reheat your food using wax paper or white paper towels in glass or ceramic containers.
