The Long-Term Consequences of Rejection

We are learning that being ostracized or rejected from your peers, such as other students in school, can leave invisible yet lasting damage.

There are three stages for ostracism.  

  • being excluded or ignored by others
  • coping with the ostracism
  • being resigned to the ostracism

All human beings need contact with other people and want to feel accepted. If exclusion occurs for a long time, a person will become resigned to it. This, in turn, can lead to depression, feeling alienated, etc.
