One reason this happens is the “wow” factor. This means giving a gift you hope will surprise the recipient, when in fact, they had already provided ideas for gifts they would like. Another problem? Giving physical gifts when the other person would prefer an experience, such as going to a movie. Also, socially responsible gifts sound nice, but often don’t mean anything to the recipient.
