“Mixed Depression,” Agitation May Signal Suicide Risk
A large study of close to 3,000 patients suggested that doctors should look out for specific suicidal signs – certain behavioral patterns – in people with major depression, such as risky and agitated behavior, impulsiveness, and mixed depression that included mania symptoms. The researchers state that the standard methods for identifying those at risk missed a lot of the signs. They hope that the study results will increase awareness of doctors to how to better identify the signs. The challenge, though, remains which treatment would be best once the risk has been recognized. More research needs to be done in the future.
