No More Pap Tests?

Are Pap tests for women a thing of the past? In March, an advisory committee to the FDA proposed the human papilloma virus (HPV) test developed by the Roche company replace the timed-tested Pap screening. The FDA still has to concede that the fundamental test be abandoned, and that determination may take years. Even with that accomplished, the medical community would have to decide for itself if the HPV test is a better evaluator of cervical cancer. The American Cancer Society gives credit to the Pap test as a primary reason for the decline in cervical cancer, once a common cause of death in women.
