No Surprise: Massage Therapy Works
Researchers at University of Illinois at Chicago found that massage can relieve muscle soreness, and improve general blood flow. As part of their study, healthy but inactive adults were asked to exercise their legs until they were sore. Half of the subjects received massages on their lower bodies; the other half did not. Following 90 minutes of massage therapy, the participants were no longer sore. Those who did not receive massages were sore up to 24 hours later. Also, massaged participants showed improvement when it came to blood flow, while the non-massage group showed reduced blood flow up to 48 hours after exercise, not returning to normal until 72 hours later.
