Outmoded Pelvic Exams
According to a recent study from the University of California, San Francisco, many physicians are subjecting their female patients to routine pelvic exams with apparently little or no justification. Guidelines from the American Cancer Society, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, suggest that doctors do not need to perform annual Pap smears in order to screen for cervical cancer. Most of the doctors surveyed indicated that they would perform routine pelvic exams on their patients in spite of the ACOG guidelines regarding age, lack of symptoms, or low risk for pelvic cancers.
