Research shows that couples are more successful in overcoming a conflict, when they don’t primarily focus on what happened, but the efforts their partner makes to resolve the problem. Withdrawing, becoming resentful, or critical, stifles the process of beginning repair of the relationship because the partner’s attempts to communicate are not recognized. Keeping negative feelings at bay, and starting the process of solving the issues soon after the conflict occurred, is an important step to keep the negative feelings from festering. This begins with daily communication, and management of smaller conflicts, in a kind and effective way.
