Postpartum Depression: It’s Not Just About Feeling Sad
Postpartum depression doesn’t always manifest itself in a textbook way – or according to the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. At times, women don’t experience any symptoms until after the first six weeks after birth. Instead of the classic symptoms of sadness and decreased energy, these women might experience quite the opposite — almost manic energy, anxiety, and a racing mind. In turn, this can cause insomnia and overeating.
There’s a lot of controversy about the specific causes of postpartum depression and the criteria by which to diagnose it. It’s therefore of utmost importance for a new mother to pay close attention to her feelings and seek help as soon as possible.
