Study of CBT Anger Treatment for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans

How well are veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars served by current anger and aggression treatments? Since there were few controlled studies conducted to address this issue, a randomized pilot study comparing an adapted cognitive behavioral intervention (CBI) to a supportive intervention (SI) control condition for the treatment of anger problems in these returning was launched. Participants included 25 veterans impacted by warzone trauma, anger problems, and hyperarousal symptoms. The study’s findings indicated measureable improvement with CBI as opposed to supportive therapies focused on relaxation and psychoeducation. Researchers suggest replication of the study be conducted with a more diverse sample in the future.
