The Benefit of Postponing Retirement

A recent study from France tracked 400,000 retirees to study the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Researcher Carole Dufouil reported the results at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Boston in July 2013. The study revealed that individuals who retired at 65 were 14.6% less likely to experience dementia than those retiring at 60. Also, for each additional year of work, the risk of developing Alzheimer’s dropped by 3.2%. Researchers suspect that the reasons for this include the fact that continuing to work involves mental challenges, physical activity, and social connections, all of which lower the risk of Alzheimer’s.
