The Enneagram, Stereotyping, and the Fundamental Attribution Error

It’s a human tendency to believe that someone who wrongs us does so because of poor character, and when we wrong others it’s due to bad circumstances. This leads to the regrettable fact that humans tend to stereotype others, assuming they can base another person’s character on one or a few traits or actions.

No surprise then, that Enneagrams are so popular with people. They love to explain why someone acted the way they did because they’re this or that type. And all too often, they also like using their Ennea-type as justification for their own problematic behavior.
