To Vent or Not to Vent

Venting seems like a good idea. How could honesty be bad for your relationship? Sometimes a couple comes together believing that sharing every negative thought, blunt criticism, and expression of anger will keep them honest and the air clear, but they soon find out differently. Venting anger usually just deteriorates into relational dumping, where partners simply dump their negativity onto each other and create deeper feelings of hostility, fear of confrontation in one or both partners, retaliation, and greater dysfunction. Relationship is better built by opening up to your partner and by expressing vulnerability that inspires reciprocal sharing.
