Too Many Prescription Drugs?
The number of Americans taking a prescribed drug is alarming. Most of these drugs are adult anti-depressants, according to a 2013 national annual health report. Too many of them have been found to be harmful, ineffective, or even deadly due to adverse reactions or abuse. Since 1996, the direct-to-consumer advertising has tripled, making the population more aware and open to prescriptions, explaining the rise in use. The only decrease in prescriptions has been connected to antibiotics, as more people are aware that they don’t resolve viruses like the common cold. Drug companies are raking in the cash, while the general population remains oblivious to the perils, and more appropriate alternative treatments.
