Understanding Anger

Anger is a normal emotion. We all feel it at one time or another. However, we learn to suppress our anger. We may even be taught to be ashamed of feeling angry. Yet, there are ways to manage anger in a healthier manner.

First, consider the STARR method:  Stop, Think, Ask, Reduce, Reward. This helps us in the moment to pay attention to rising irritation. This strategy makes us aware that we are getting angry and teaches us steps to keep anger under control. Another idea is AIR:  adrenaline, identify, reaction. Finally, when angry, try to keep things in perspective. Work at not letting your thoughts overwhelm the situation.
