Underwater Exercise: The Wetter The Better

A recent Canadian study focusing on cardiovascular health has found that water exercise can be as beneficial, if not better, than land-based exercise. These findings were presented at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in October, 2012. The study found that riding a submerged exercise bicycle, aka immersible ergocycle, was as beneficial aerobically as riding a stationary bike in the home or at the gym. Water exercise is a popular alternative to land-based routines for overweight individuals or those who suffer from joint problems. The study concluded that the workouts were possibly more efficient than land-based exercise because the pressure of the water on the legs makes blood return more effectively to the heart.
