Why Do Women Have More Strokes?
More women than men are stroke victims. More women die from strokes. Why? Female stroke victims are at risk in unique ways. Women’s bodies are uniquely impacted by pregnancy, hormonal shifts, and increased incidences of migraine headaches and abnormal heart rhythm. To help diminish the stroke risk to women, the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association published new stroke guidelines in 2014. Guidlines include information regarding the risks of using birth control pills while managing high blood pressure; increased prevalence of stroke in women who deal with migraines that include visual auras; and suggestions for women who deal with high blood pressure linked to pregnancy-induced preeclampsia, as well as hormone replacement therapy.
