Why Women Tend to Live Longer Than Men

As is the case with most animal species, human females tend to live longer than males.  A recent study conducted at Tokyo Medical and Dental University has shed light on why this is the case.  A research team analyzed blood samples from 356 healthy men and women between the ages of 20 and 90.  They focused on counting levels of white cells and cytokines, which are molecules that interact with immune system cells to regulate the body’s response to disease.  While the levels decrease with age in both sexes, men have a much steeper decline in the cells that protect against infection.
