The high-normal range of blood sugar levels is not considered high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes or even pre-diabetes. Participants in the four-year study were between 60 and 64 years old. Brain scans were taken four years apart. During that time, brain shrinkage for those participants whose blood sugar was considered “high normal” was between six and ten percent. Researchers believe that, if their findings are confirmed, the definition of both diabetes and harmful blood glucose levels may need to be re-examined.
