Goals of Cognitive Therapy

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a type of treatment designed to help individuals understand the thoughts and feelings that influence their behaviors. The therapist and patient seek to determine how experiences and life events shaped the patient’s beliefs, assumptions, and coping mechanisms, especially in individuals who have been diagnosed with personality disorders. A team approach among all the therapists is a key to the success of CBT. Patients are taught skills that allow them to become their own therapists. Patients function as part of the team and set goals for themselves at the beginning of treatment. In some cases, only six to twelve sessions are needed for the patients reach their goals and feel better.
