Negative News Stresses Women More Than Men

A recent study from the University of Montreal finds that bad or depressing news articles in the media affect women more than the same articles affect men. The research consisted of having subjects read actual news stories. The researchers then tested the saliva of each individual for the hormone, cortisol. The more cortisol that was present, the higher the stress level of that individual. Women not only exhibited higher levels of cortisol, they were also able to recollect the information they read more clearly than the men in the study. Since it is difficult to escape bad news, researchers are concerned about how much stress this contributes to a person’s life.
