Stress And Relaxation: An Introduction

Most of us would love to eliminate all stress from our lives, but without stress we wouldn’t be alive. Stress is inherent in our interactions with the world, and unless it’s overwhelming, keeps us growing and developing throughout our lives. The word stress comes from a Latin word meaning “narrow” or “tight,” indicating that the discomfort or distress caused by stress is from forces that limit our freedom and movement; in other words, from external sources like cancer or a demanding boss. Internalizing our stress agitates our mind, throws our nervous system out of balance, and interferes with our immune system, causing the many stress-related disorders in our society.
